About the Grade Calculator
Most courses weight categories differently: homework might be 20%, quizzes 15% and the final 30%. This tool does two jobs. It works out your current weighted grade, and it tells you what you need on the final exam to finish with the grade you want.
How to use it
- In "Weighted grade", list each category with its score and weight from your syllabus.
- Read your overall grade and letter grade. Weights do not need to add up to 100.
- Switch to "Final exam needed", enter your current grade, your target and the final's weight.
The formula
Weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights)
Final needed = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight
Worked examples
Current grade
Homework 92% (20), quizzes 85% (15), midterm 78% (25), project 95% (15). (1840 + 1275 + 1950 + 1425) ÷ 75 = 86.5%, a B.
What you need on the final
Current grade 84%, target 90%, final worth 30%: (90 − 84 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 104%. That target is out of reach without extra credit, but 87% would need 94%.
Frequently asked questions
My weights add up to less than 100. Is that OK?
Yes. The calculator divides by the total weight entered so far, which gives your grade on the work graded to date.
What if the result is over 100%?
It means the target cannot be reached on the final alone. Ask about extra credit or aim for the next grade down.
Which letter grade scale does it use?
The common US scale: 93+ A, 90 A-, 87 B+, 83 B, 80 B-, and so on down to F below 60.
